The background IP firewall

How we keep client work valuable today while building the reusable engine that matters tomorrow.

FFrooxiStudio thesis · Jun 16, 2026

There is a tension at the heart of a studio that also builds products: be generous with clients today, and still own the reusable engine that compounds tomorrow. The way through is a clear line, a firewall, between the two.

Two kinds of value in every project

Each engagement produces foreground value the client should own outright, and background value, the generic patterns and infrastructure, that the studio carries from one project to the next.

Confusing the two is where studios either shortchange clients or quietly give away the very thing that would have made them durable.

The firewall makes generosity safe

With the line drawn clearly in both the contract and the codebase, you can be fully generous in the foreground precisely because the background is protected. The client gets a better result because you have built this shape before.

The firewall is not about holding back. It is what lets you give your best work away and still keep compounding.
